Boophone disticha is a very widespread species native to Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and finds its centre of occurrence in the Republic of South Africa. This species varies considerably due to geographic and climatic variations.

The genus Boophone comprises 3 species, namely: B. disticha, B. haemanthoides and B. ernestii-ruschii. The sunk taxon "Boophone pulchra" has been transferred to Brunsvigia pulchra.

The above photos were taken during my visits to Namibia and South Africa. These two countries are home to some of the rarest bulb species in the world. I may have seed of Boophone disticha for free distribution towards the end of this year if anyone is interested.

Excuse me members I do not have any knowledge of Chinese softwares and therefore can only write in English. However, I can understand Chinese without problem.

Dear payju, sds, charlot,

Like I have said, the photos were taken during my trips to southern Africa. My interests in bulbs (and orchids) have taken me many times to southern Africa and several times to South America. My main focus is bulbs of the family Amaryllidaceace though I grow a wide range of species of other families. As a matter of fact, I have a large collection of bulbs, most of which have been relocated to my second home in Cape Town, South Africa. I am always happy to spare plant materials with other growers.

I am member of the International Bulb Society (IBS) and have posted a number of photos and notes of various species to the Bulb Gallery. Members are most welcome to visit the IBS web-site at: http://www.bulbsociety.org (check out such genera as "Hippeastrum sp", "Hessea", "Brunsvigia" and "Boophane", I was under the name of Dennis Tsang).

Charlot, thanks for posting the beautiful picture of Ledebouria crispa which is definitely a nice little species. If there is any species you are looking for, please let me know, perhaps I may have spare bulbs for you. By the way, I shall be going to southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana and Namibia) in November/December for one month, looking for a couple of rare amaryllids - Amaryllis paradiscola and Haemanthus avasmontanus. I have been to the habitats before but had no luck locating any bulbs (:o(

Dear DJL
Really?Are you also interested in SA Terrestrial Orchids?Because northern Taiwan had winter rain,I feel the cape bulb also growing nice and successful here.But the early summer rain season is another problem for us.
Anyway I had try to growing some orchids like Gladiolus and peacoca Moraea this fall and other bulbs by seeds.
Because I had ever imported many Ledebouria ,Cyrtanthus and others rare bulb from SA,but I feel them can not growing well after them leave their home land.Maybe the climate changed and Taiwan was far away from SA.
Not same as you love Amaryllidaceace only .I am also interested in Iridaceae and Hyacinthaceae too.
When you travel to SA.Had you ever saw aquatic Nerine at wild?
Photo was the species Pelagonium at my home.
Many thanks for you can spare bulbs for me.

Dear Charlot and friends:

As a matter of fact, I came across a wide range of terrestrial orchids on the Drakensberg in South Africa near the Lesotho border. I did take a lot of photos of these orchids and shall have to dig out the files for posting at the Orchid Forum separately.

Don't worry Charlot, I shall see what I can get for you when I am travelling around southern Africa in November. I do have a lot of bulbs to give away: Amaryllis belladonna, Brunsvigia orientalis, Brunsvigia josephinae, Boophone disticha, Cyrtanthus, Haemanthus, Hippeastrum puniceum, Crinum, Phaedranassa, Zephyranthes and many, many more.... I have got 2 greenhouses full of bulbs, orchids and a few succulent plants. Consult your requirements and let me know your wish list.

Charlot, mind telling me PRIVATELY your supplier of South African bulbs? Bear in mind that some bulb vendors are not really reliable in terms of identity and quality of plants.

Very nice specimen that looks perfectly healthy to me! In humid climates, Boophone bulbs are vulnerable to fungal attack which will lead to bulb rot. Bulbs should be cultivated in such manner that the entire bulb is sitting on top of soil level to minimise the chance of rotting and to maximise the ornamental value of the bulb itself. The growing medium you use appears to be perfectly well drained. Is it a plastic, terra cotta or clay pot?
