Family Name: Chenopodiaceae Catalogue No.: 334M English Name: Strawberry Blite Description: (Please note that this latter word has nothing to do with any dreaded plant disease but comes from the Latin word blitum meaning spinach - gosh, did the Romans really make their kids eat the stuff!). This is an interesting plant from southern Europe with soft, fleshy, coarsely toothed, spear-shaped leaves, and bearing spikes of dense clusters of tiny green flowers. These are followed by strawberry (mulberry would be more accurate)-like fruits which are edible and, although somewhat insipid, can be added to salads as an unusual decoration, eaten boiled and seasoned or used as a natural red dye for other foods. Needless to say, the young leaves can be used as a substitute for spinach. 1-2 ft. Classification: Annual, Hardy, First Year Flowering
